Carol Annette Johnson went to be with Jesus on September 8, 2022 at Woodcrest Nursing Center. She was born on October 5, 1947 in Chicago, IL to the late George C. and Frances A. Sumrak (McBlaine).
As a child, the family moved to Winimac, Indiana, where she graduated from high school in 1965. In 1967, while working for the State Highway Commission, she met a law student, Joseph (Joe) M. Johnson, II. They were married July 5, 1969 and began living in Vincennes, Indiana, where Joe started practicing law in 1971. They moved to Decatur in July, 1974.
Joe and Carol were active in the both the Indiana State and American Bar Associations. Carol became President of the Indiana Lawyer’s Auxiliary and the Newsletter Editor of the American Lawyer’s Auxiliary, while Joe became President of the Indiana Bar Foundation and a member of the Board of Directors of the State Bar Association. Carol graduated from Indiana University and became a Realtor in 1984. Carol was associated with Ideal Real Estate and later became a mortgage loan originator for First Federal Savings and Loan Association.
Carol is survived by her husband, Joe, and daughter, Buffy J. Layton (Ty) of Carmel, Indiana; and sons, Joseph M. III, (Amanda) Decatur, Indiana and Christopher W. of Marfa, Texas; and five grandchildren, Chloe and Austin Layton of Carmel, and Ellie, Jack and Miles Johnson of Decatur; and brother Ronald Sumrak (Sherry) of Elkhart, sisters: Marlene Slagle (Jay) of Indianapolis and Donna Marbach (Rex) of Decatur.
For many years, Carol and Joe attended First United Methodist Church in Decatur, and in recent years have attended Sonlight Community Church in Angola, near their Lake James summer home.
Visitation will be held on Monday, September 12, 2022 from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. and Tuesday, September 13th from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. at Haggard-Hirschy & Zelt Funeral Home.
A Private Family service and Holy Rosary will be held on Tuesday, with Father David Ruppert residing the Rosary and Pastor Dan York officiating the service.
