Hortensia S. Artea, 95, former longtime resident of Decatur, IN, passed away Wednesday, September 13, 2023, at Adams Memorial Hospital. She was born in Matamoros, Mexico, on August 23, 1928, the daughter of the late Leocadio and Brijida (Guerra) Sifuentes. On May 4, 1952, Hortensia married Refugio Artea and he preceded her in death on January 2, 1983.
She was a parishioner of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church and a member of the Rosary Society. She retired from Decatur Industries after many years of service. She was a skilled seamstress and was also a homemaker and member of the Happy Homemakers in Decatur.
Hortensia and her late husband Refugio were active members of the United Mexican American Club and helped put on many fundraisers and benefits overs the years. They also enjoyed dressing in traditional attire and singing mariachi music.
She is survived by 2 of her 5 children, Felipe Artea of Decatur and Norma (Mark) Slusher of Ohio City, OH; 6 grandchildren, Michelle (Noah) Norman, Matt (Elisha) Manley, Mark (Abby) Manley all of Decatur, Lisa (Tim) Springman of Alexandria, VA, Kristy (Luke) Reichert, and Tina Slusher both of Wren, OH; 17 great grandchildren.
She was also preceded by her son, Jesus Artea; 2 daughters, Marie Olivia Artea and Celia Artea Horne; 5 brothers and 4 sisters.
Visitation will be from 3:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Monday, September 18, 2023, at Haggard-Hirschy & Zelt Funeral Home, with a reciting of the Holy Rosary at 2:30 p.m.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 19, 2023, in St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, with an hour of visitation before from 9:00 – 10:00 a.m. in the St. Mary’s Parish Hall. Father David Ruppert will be presiding and burial will follow in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.
