Jerry L. Cowans

Jerry L. Cowans, 89, of Decatur, passed away Thursday morning, September 11, 2025, at Bluffton Regional Medical Center. He was born in Magley, IN, on October 13, 1935, the son of the late Lester and Marie (Scherry) Cowans. On June 14, 1957, Jerry married Linda L. Gamsby, she preceded him in death on December 24, 2017.

He attended First Baptist Church and graduated from Decatur High School in 1953. For 25 years, Jerry volunteered for the Decatur Fire Department. He worked for A.E.P. as a Lineman, for 35 years, Decatur Co-op parttime for 10 years and Decatur Telephone Gas for 6 years.

Jerry is survived by his sons, Brett (Kathy) Cowans of W. Lafayette, IN, and Bryan (Carla) Cowans of Yukon, OK; 2 brothers, Joe (Shirley) Cowans, and Tom (Maryann) Cowans; a sister, Marlene (Jim) Boyle; 4 grandchildren, Erik (Courtney) Cowans, Megan Cowans, Blair (Kyle) Thacker & Dustin (Alexa) Cowans; 4 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Linda Cowans; 2 brothers, Dan & John Cowans.

Visitation will be from 4:30 – 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, September 18, 2025, at Haggard-Hirschy & Zelt Funeral Home.

A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, September 19, 2025, at Haggard-Hirschy & Zelt Funeral Home, with visitation an hour prior to the service from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. Officiating will be John Follett.  Burial will follow in Decatur Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church or Decatur Fire Department.
