Larry L. Brunner Sr.

Larry L. Brunner, 84, of Decatur, passed away on Monday, August 19, 2024 at Swiss Village Nursing Home. Larry was born in Decatur on November 30, 1939, to the late Lester H. and Ethel L. (Bunner) Brunner. On December 24, 1959, he married Mary Lou Lewton.

When Larry was 5 years old, he lost his arm in a farming accident, but he did not let this slow him down. He played baseball and basketball for the Pleasant Mills Spartans team in high school, worked on the Brunner farm driving equipment, and helped build several barns and homes for himself and other family members. He also loved hunting and watching IU basketball. In the 1960’s Victor Porter was willing to give Larry a chance and hired him to work for Duo boats, Signa boats, and later Formula Boats/Thunderbird Products. He retired in 2004 after working 44 years for Mr. Porter.

Larry is survived by his wife of 64 years, Mary Lou Brunner of Decatur; 2 sons, Larry L. (Kaylehn) Brunner Jr. of Decatur and Chad (Jodi) Brunner of Monroe; a sister, Barb (Tom) Roudebush of Monroe; 9 grandchildren, Chelsey (Alex) Traurig, Cody (Jessica) Brunner, Nash (Autumn) Brunner, Trey Brunner, Drew Brunner, Tara (Parick Hamilton) Brunner, Sasha Harrison, Jena Hirschy and Clayton Scott; 9 great grandchildren, Harper Traurig, Nic and Parker Harrison, Bryson, Jordyn, and Bentley Hamilton, Carson and Addy Scott, Abe Hirschy.

Larry was preceded in death by a son, Ted Brunner; a daughter-in-law, Debbie (McAllister) Brunner; a brother, Dwight Brunner; 2 sisters, Sandy Tumbleson and Jo Reichert.

Visitation will be on Thursday, August 22, 2024 from 3:00 – 7:00 p.m. at Haggard-Hirschy & Zelt Funeral Home.

Funeral service for Larry will be at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, August 23, 2024 also at the funeral home with Pastor Rocky Evans officiating. Calling prior to service will be from 9:00 – 10:00 a.m.

Burial will follow in Mt. Tabor Cemetery, rural Decatur.

Preferred memorials are to Pleasant Mills United Methodist Church.
