Louise Wolpert Obituary

Louise Ann Wolpert, 71, of Decatur, IN, passed away on Trinity Sunday, June 4, 2023, fortified with the Sacraments of Holy Mother Church, at Adams Woodcrest. She was born in Decatur, IN, on February 28, 1952, the 3rd of the 7 children of the late Louis A. and Vera C. (Lengerich) Wolpert.

She was a lifelong parishioner of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church and a member of the Women of St. Mary of which she was a past president. She served on the St. Mary’s 175th Anniversary Committee and was also a member of the Catholic Ladies of Columbia St. Mary’s Council 20. Louise had a deep and stoic faith and could always be found reading, studying and had the desire to always learn more.

Louise valued education and began her instruction at St. Joseph Catholic School, then graduated in 1970 from Bellmont High School, and received an Associate’s in General Studies from Florida Keys Community College. She went on to receive a Bachelor’s in History & Anthropology from the University of Texas at El Paso and finally obtained a Master’s in Library Science from Indiana University.

She served her country as a Hospital Corpsman in the U.S. Navy from 1973 – 1976. She worked for the Toledo Lucas County Public Library for 9 years before her long tenure with the Adams Public Library, where she retired from in 2016. Louise was the County Historian and was a member of the Adams County Historical Society. Over the years she filed for countless grants for the museum. She was also instrumental in the restoration of the Peace Monument Veteran’s Memorial at the county courthouse. 

Louise is survived by her son, Miguel A. (Nicola) Garcia of Stafford, VA; 3 grandchildren, Maja, Tessa, and Ryan Garcia; 2 brothers, Michael (Jean) Wolpert of Bay Village, OH and Charles (Sundra) Wolpert of Lafayette; 2 sisters, Rita Wolpert of Decatur and Teresa (Farrell) Vernon of Ft. Wayne; 2 sisters-in-law, Jaqueline Wolpert of Ft. Wayne and Valerie Pearce of Hermann, MO.

She was preceded in death by 2 brothers, Philip Wolpert and James Wolpert.

Visitation will be from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 8, 2023, at Haggard-Hirschy & Zelt Funeral Home, with a reciting of the Holy Rosary at 4:30 p.m.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, June 9, 2023, in St. Mary of the Assumption Church, with visitation from 9:00 – 10:00 a.m. in the St. Mary’s Parish Hall. Father LeeAllen Fortin will be presiding and burial will immediately follow in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. Military Honors will be rendered by the American Legion Adams Post 43 Color Guard.

Memorials may be made to Masses, St. Joseph Catholic School Library, or the Adams County Historical Society.
