Marty G. Shaffer, 72, of Decatur, passed away Wednesday evening, August 13, 2025, at his residence. He was born in Decatur, IN, on June 11, 1953, the son of Richard and Betty (Tumbleson) Shaffer.
He worked for the Town of Monroe, as the Utilities Superintendent, for 40 years. Marty was a member of the Monroe Fire Department & Rescue from
1981 – 2004, and from 1991 – 2002 he served as the Assistant Chief.
Marty was also a member of the American Water Works Association and the Indiana Rural Water Association.
He was dedicated to serving the Monroe Youth League (coaching, mowing, cooking, whatever needed done) for over 30 years. He also volunteered over the years at Adams Central, setting up for Cross Country and Wrestling events.
Marty is survived by his 2 sons, Justin (Kacie) Shaffer and Andrew (Amber) Shaffer both of Decatur, IN; 4 sisters, Pat Geimer of Waynedale, IN, Linda Carper of Corunna, IN, Sandy West of Berne, IN, and Kathy Nestleroad of Montpelier, IN; 5 grandchildren, Adalie, Aithen, Aryssa, Anson, and Henry Shaffer.
Visitation will be from 3:00 – 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, at Haggard-Hirschy & Zelt Funeral Home.
A Funeral Service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, at Haggard-Hirschy & Zelt Funeral Home, with visitation an hour prior to the service from 9:00 – 10:00 a.m. Rev. Allen Kahler will be officiating the service.
Memorials may be given to Monroe Youth League or Adams County Cancer Coalition.
