Oscar B. Eguia, 67, of Decatur, Indiana, passed away on Sunday, July 9, 2023, surrounded by his family at Envive Healthcare of Berne. Oscar was born on May 20, 1956 in Decatur to the late Adan Cordova Eguia and Andrea (Belmarez) Eguia.
He was a parishioner of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church. He was a member of the Laborers Union 213 of Fort Wayne. He worked for E & B Paving for 10 years and had worked as a Confinement officer at Wood Youth Center. Oscar served his country in the United States Army.
Oscar liked to spend his days stealing his grandkids’ snacks and telling them stories of the “Ole Back Cricks.” His favorite football team was the Minnesota Vikings. He and Elijah would often bicker over if the Colts would ever beat the Vikings.
He is survived by his 8 children; Olivia (Steve Caldwell) Arredondo, Christina Eguia, and Guadalupe Eguia of Battle Creek, MI, Jessica (Charles) Fosnaugh of Decatur, Sarah (Leah Oetting) Nunez of Decatur, Shana (Kyle Hinton) Schaible of Bryant, Brittany Eguia of Ft. Wayne, and last, but by far his favorite, Elijah Eguia of Decatur; the mother of his children, Penny Eguia of Decatur; 4 brothers, Francisco Eguia, David Eguia, Adam (Wanda) Eguia and Fernando Eguia; 3 sisters, Ermelinda Reyes, Grace Tellez, and Anna Maria Eguia; 25 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews whom he loved as his own.
Oscar was preceded in death by a brother, Louis Eguia; 2 sisters, Angelina Ramos, and Esther Ybarra.
Visitation will be from 4:30 – 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, July 12, 2023 at Haggard-Hirschy & Zelt Funeral Home, with Reciting of the Holy Rosary at 4:00 p.m.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 13, 2023 at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, with Father Dave Ruppert officiating. Calling will be 1 hour prior to Mass from 12:00 – 1:00 p.m. in the St. Mary’s Parish Hall. Military Honors will be rendered at the church by the American Legion Adams Post 43 Color Guard.
Burial will take place in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery at later date.
