Richard P. “Dick” Stimpson, 86, of Decatur, passed away Monday evening, January 5, 2026, at Adams Memorial Hospital. He was born in Stoughton, MA, on May 30, 1939, the son of Paul G. and Ethel (Barbato) Stimpson. Richard married his first wife, Norma J. (Heimann) Stimpson on August 31, 1958, she preceded him in death on February 24, 2017. On October 31, 2020, he married Carolyn Hough.
He was a parishioner of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church. Dick served in the United States Air Force and was very active in the community. He was a Radio Announcer for WADM & WNUY, worked in Advertising for the Decatur Daily Democrat and the Berne Witness, retiring from there.
Dick was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Decatur Elks Lodge #993, and St. Vincent De Paul Society. He also served on the Decatur Parks Board and the Adams County Parks Board.
He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Stimpson of Decatur, IN; 2 sons, Michael (Deborah) Stimpson of Fishers, IN, and Tony (Michelle) Stimpson of Decatur, IN; his daughter, Amy (Greg) Ehlerding of Fort Wayne, IN; a step daughter, Michele Hinshaw; a step son, Brad (Jackie) Hinshaw; 10 grandchildren; a step grandson; 17 great grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren.
Dick was preceded in death by his parents, first wife, a son, Matthew (in infancy), and a son, Andrew Stimpson.
Visitation will be from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 8, 2026, at Haggard-Hirschy & Zelt Funeral Home, with a Reciting of the Holy Rosary at 3:30 p.m.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, January 9, 2026, at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, with visitation prior to the mass from 9:00 – 10:00 a.m. in the Parish Hall. Father Stephen Colchin will be presiding and burial will follow in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to St. Vincent De Paul Society.
