Steven A. Heimann, 70, of Decatur, passed away at his residence on Thursday, September 29, 2022 after a 17-month battle with terminal lung cancer. He was surrounded by his loved ones when he left this world. He was born on September 5, 1952, in Decatur, IN, to the late Arthur J. and Janet L. “Ginny” (Meyer) Heimann.
He attended St. Joseph Catholic School as a child and graduated from Bellmont High School in 1970. He then enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and served in Vietnam, with VMA-311, MAG-12, Bien Hoa, RVA. He attained the rank of Sergeant and received an honorable discharge after 4 years. Steve returned to Decatur and married Miss Vera Beth Kinkle from Van Wert, Ohio on July 18, 1981.
Steve was an enthusiast of Harley Davidson Motorcycles and was an avid hunter. He was a competent mechanic, as well as a master body repair man.
He retired from the Veterans Affairs Medical Center after 32 years of federal service. He was also a past member of the American Legion Post 43.
Steve is survived by his wife of 41 years, Beth Heimann of Decatur; 4 children, Marvin S. (Casandra) Heimann of Decatur, Heather L. Jefferson of Colfax, NC, Veronica L. Rumschlag of Grand Rapids, MI, and Spencer D. K. Heimann both of Decatur; a brother, Jim (Cindy) Heimann of Decatur, IN; 4 sisters, Anne Smith of Decatur, IN, Patricia (Dave) Gebhard of Decatur, IN, Susan (Dean) Fisher of Van Wert, OH, Rhonda (Todd) Wetzel of Decatur, IN; 6 grandchildren, Jacob, Morgan, Cameron, Kaleb, Jasper Heimann and Olivia Rumschlag.
Visitation will be from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. on Monday, October 3, 2022, at Haggard-Hirschy & Zelt Funeral Home.
A Funeral Liturgy will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, October 4, 2022, at Haggard-Hirschy & Zelt Funeral Home, with a viewing an hour prior to the service from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m.
Father David Ruppert will be presiding. Burial will immediately follow in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, with Military Graveside Rites conducted by the American Legion Post 43 Color Guard.
